Brazilian defender Marcelo refused to make a comparison between his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo Juventus striker and Barcelona star Lionel Messi, pointing out that both have different characteristics.

Marcelo explained that Messi and Ronaldo outperform all the other players in the world, but refused to prefer his close friend over the Argentine star unusually, during a live broadcast with Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro on Instagram.

Marcelo: Lionel Messi, the hardest player I've ever faced

"When people ask who is better, it's hard, we players who play football can say who we prefer, but that doesn't mean it's the best, because every player has certain qualities," the Brazilian left-back said during his interview with Cannavaro.

"I've trained with Ronaldo and played with him for 10 years, he's got the motivation to give him on the pitch, the way he does things, how he talks to you when he takes you to the top with your colleagues," he said.

"Messi has played many times against him, he can stay standing, then out of nowhere to catch the ball, and no one can stop him," he added. Cannavaro then intervened and ended the conversation by saying, "We are talking about two phenomena."

Marcelo stressed that Messi is the hardest player he has faced during his professional career, adding, "I did not play against Ronaldo, so I think Messi is the hardest player I have faced, we are talking about Messi, it is hypocritical to choose another player."
